Important Information when Visiting New Zealand

  • In New Zealand you must drive on the left, which is why the steering wheel is on the right, the stick shift is on your left, and the roundabouts are done clockwise.
  • Keep in mind that travel times may take longer than what Google Maps indicated initially.
  • New Zealand has beautiful, rural landscapes but also winding and narrow roads. In these areas it is important to drive carefully and adapt your speed to the road conditions. Pay attention to warning signs and prepare yourself to encounter large vehicles, cyclists or animals on the road.
  • New Zealand is known for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. Respect the environment while you drive and do not litter. In addition, in some areas, it is possible to encounter animals on the road such as sheep or birds. Reduce your speed and let the animals cross when necessary.
  • In New Zealand it is common to find narrow bridges where only one vehicle may pass at a time. All these are indicated ahead of time on the asphalt as a “one lane bridge” and there are signs to indicate who has the right of way.
  • 20 years is the minimum age to rent a vehicle. The renter must be also be the payment cardholder.
  • Make sure the rental vehicle adapts to your needs. If you are going to explore destinations of difficult access, dirt roads or very steep hills, we recommend renting an SUV. If you want to maintain a low gas cost, ideally you should rent a sedan.
  • Consider additional equipment that you might need during your adventure such as a car seat, Wi-Fi, GPS or others.
  • During the winter, roads will become snowy and frozen. So if you are traveling anywhere in the South Island and Central North Island you will need snow chains to explore mountain passes and everyday streets. Snow chains are a legal requirement in some areas.

  • Payment Method – A credit card will be required (with the name of the main driver) to pay the rental and security deposit. This deposit will be reimbursed when the car is returned, if the car is returned in the same condition in which it was received at the office. This can take several days or up to a week to process.
