Important Information when Visiting Mexico

  • In Mexico, it is common to run into “topes” or speed bumps on the road, especially in urban areas and near schools. These are obstacles designed to reduce the speed of the vehicles. Pay attention to the warning signs and lower the speed gradually when approaching them.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists have the right of way at crosswalks and bike lanes. Pay attention to your surroundings and yield when necessary. Maintain a safe distance when passing cyclists on the road and respecting them as vulnerable users of the street.
  • Respect red and green traffic lights, stopping completely at the mandatory stops. In addition, pay attention to road signage and follow the instructions of exclusive lanes and U-turns, and speed limits.
  • When driving on mountain or curvy roads, reduce your speed and keep necessary precautions. In addition, when facing steep hills, select the adequate gear change.
  • Use lowlights during the night and when driving with conditions of little visibility, such as inside a tunnel. You must also turn on the blinkers when making maneuvers to overtake or stop temporarily.
  • Valid Driver’s License – We will need a driver’s license from your origin country to drive in Mexico, along with your passport.
  • Proof of Insurance – If you plan to self-insure, we will need proof of your personal coverage with the name of the renter on the policy and proof of collision insurance and civil liability coverage of bodily injury and property damage.
  • Form of Payment – We will require a credit card (main driver is the cardholder) to make a deposit for the rental. The deposits vary according to the protection plan you choose and the vehicle. This deposit is returned when the automobile is returned, if the automobile is in the same condition as when it was received at the office, and it can take a few days or up to a week to process.
  • In Mexico, the currency is the Mexican “peso”. However, all establishments accept dollars (most common currency for tourists). We always recommend traveling with at least a few pesos in your pocket. The majority of restaurants, supermarkets and food shops also accept a credit or debit card payment. A dollar ($1) is equivalent to 17 pesos approximately (this varies according to the exchange rate). You can exchange dollars in banks or at exchange agencies in the international airport, but with a very high exchange rate.
  • We leave you with some reasons why you need to visit Mexico:
  • Mexico houses impressive archeological sites of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Mayans, Aztecs, Toltecs and many others. Chichen Itza, Teotihuacan, Palenque, and Monte Alban are just some of the examples of these incredible historic treasures that you can visit and explore.
  • Mexican food was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO in 2010. The diverse flavors, ingredients and culinary techniques of Mexican cuisine are a unique experience. You cannot miss the opportunity to taste traditional dishes such as tacos, mole, tamales, chiles en nogada, and the famous guacamole.
  • Mexico is home to an incredible biodiversity and varied landscapes. From heavenly beaches on the Caribbean side of Mexico to the impressive canyons of Barranca del Cobre in Sierra Tarahumara, going through tropical jungles in Chiapas, and the majestic mountains of Sierra Madre Occidental, the country offers a great quantity of natural destinations to explore.
  • Mexico is famous for its vibrant and colorful festivities. Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) celebrated November 1-2, is one of the most notable festivities where people honor loved ones who have passed away. Another popular event is the Feria de San Marcos, considered one of the biggest fairs in Mexico, filled with music, dance, bullfights, and cultural exhibits.
