Important Information when Visiting Dominican Republic

  • Pay special attention to the traffic signals and street signs. Some signals and regulations can differ to those you are used to, so be sure to understand them correctly.
  • Lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in urban areas and tourist zones. Respect their right of way and slowdown in areas where there is pedestrian activity.
  • You can find informal drivers, like motorcyclists, and public transportation vehicles that practice different driving styles. Keep calm and take proper precautions when sharing the roadway.
  • Speed bumps are common on Dominican highways. Slowdown when you get near them to avoid damaging the vehicle.
  • In the main cities, such as Santo Domingo, traffic can be intense during rush hour. Plan out your routes and travel time to avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Use the headlights during the day while driving in rural areas and in tunnels. In addition, use the lights when driving with low visibility, such as when it rains.

  • The client must return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as it had when it was rented. If there is less fuel, the gasoline will be charged according to the site’s rate (50% above the current price). The client has the option of paying for a full tank of gas, at the current rate, ahead of time when picking up the vehicle and so he/she does not have to worry about the fuel anymore.
  • You must not drive outside of the Dominican Republic. It is prohibited to cross the border into Haiti.
  • One-way rentals are allowed between Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, Santiago, Las Americas International Airport and Santo Domingo. Additional fees will be charged.
  • Valid Driver’s License: We will need to see a driver’s license from your home country to drive in the Dominican Republic, as well as your passport. Temporary driver’s licenses can be rejected and not be accepted.
