Important Information when Visiting Dominican Republic

  • Pay special attention to the traffic signals and street signs. Some signals and regulations can differ to those you are used to, so be sure to understand them correctly.
  • Lookout for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in urban areas and tourist zones. Respect their right of way and slowdown in areas where there is pedestrian activity.
  • You can find informal drivers, like motorcyclists, and public transportation vehicles that practice different driving styles. Keep calm and take proper precautions when sharing the roadway.
  • Speed bumps are common on Dominican highways. Slowdown when you get near them to avoid damaging the vehicle.
  • In the main cities, such as Santo Domingo, traffic can be intense during rush hour. Plan out your routes and travel time to avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Use the headlights during the day while driving in rural areas and in tunnels. In addition, use the lights when driving with low visibility, such as when it rains.
  • An additional $3.00 charge per additional driver, per day.
  • The renters and additional drivers must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license.
  • Drivers who are between the ages of 21 and 24 have an additional charge of $5 USD per day.
  • There is a maximum age limit for renters which is 75 years old.
  • If the driver has a physical handicap, there is no extra charge for an additional driver.
  • Reservations must be cancelled at least 24 hours before pick-up by the same means the reservation was made, or the client will have to pay one day’s rent or $25.00 dollars, whichever amount is higher.
  • The client must return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as it had when it was rented. If there is less fuel, the gasoline will be charged according to the site’s rate (50% above the current price). The client has the option of paying for a full tank of gas, at the current rate, ahead of time when picking up the vehicle and so he/she does not have to worry about the fuel anymore.
  • You must not drive outside of the Dominican Republic. It is prohibited to cross the border into Haiti.
  • One-way rentals are allowed between Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, Santiago, Las Americas International Airport and Santo Domingo. Additional fees will be charged.
  • Valid Driver’s License: We will need to see a driver’s license from your home country to drive in the Dominican Republic, as well as your passport. Temporary driver’s licenses can be rejected and not be accepted.
  • Proof of Insurance: If you plan to self-insure, we’ll need proof of personal coverage with the renter's name on the policy and show collision and civil liability insurance for injury and property damage. *** Economy Rent a Car does not accept commercial insurance for vehicle rental.
  • Method of Payment: Credit or debit card under the renter’s name (restrictions may apply).
  • You’ll need a credit or debit card (under the renter’s name) to make a rental deposit. Deposits vary according to the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is reimbursed when you return the car, as long as the car is in the same condition as it was when it left the office, and it could take several days or even a week to process. You may require a credit card under the renter’s name to leave a rental deposit in order to rent the car.
  • Be sure to have a valid passport and other necessary documents. Check to see if you need a visa before traveling from your home country.
  • The climate in the Dominican Republic is tropical so bring light and comfortable clothing. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, clothes that is suitable for warm weather, and appropriate footwear.
  • Due to the sunny weather, carry wide spectrum protection sunscreen, as well as insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitos and other insects.
