Important Information when Visiting Bulgaria

  • Always drive with the lights on, whether it is day or night.
  • To obtain parking in Sofia you'll need a Bulgarian phone number.
  • Both drivers and passengers must wear their seatbelt.
  • Pedestrian Zones: In urban areas, pay attention to pedestrian zones and crosswalks as pedestrians have the right of way.
  • Respect Traffic Signals: Pay attention to traffic signals and follow road directions. Speed radars are common in Bulgaria so be sure to respect speed limits.
  • Traffic Regulations: Familiarize yourself with traffic rules and regulations in Bulgaria. This includes speed limits, traffic signals, and other traffic laws. Drive on the right side of the road.
  • To drive a rental car you must be at least 22 years old, although you can rent a car if you are between 18 and 21 years old, with an additional charge of $6 a day and coverage of $5 a day.
  • You can request one free additional driver to share the driving responsibility. The main driver and the additional drive must both present a valid driver's license.
  • Underage children must use a special seat. Our office in Sofia offers baby car seats and booster seats for an additional charge (subject to availability).
  • Plan your trip and check addresses on a GPS before starting your journey. Having an approximate idea of where you are headed will make driving much easier. In addition, it is very important to know what places you'll visit, as it is always good to know the most favorable routes according to the type of vehicle you've rented, and this way arrive at your destination faster with some alternative route.
  • Valid Driver's License: You'll need a driver's license from your home country, or an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Bulgaria.
  • Method of Payment: You'll need a credit card, a debit card, bank transfer, or cash to pay for the rental.
  • Rentals will require a security deposit paid by credit card. Deposits vary depending on the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is released when you return the automobile, if said car is in the same condition as when it left the office, and this process can last several days up to a week.
  • Proof of Insurance: You can self-insure with an insurance company of your choice, or chose a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) provided by the rental car company.
  • You can travel to other countries with the rental vehicle if you've made a request at least 3 days in advance. In this case, only credit card payments are permitted.
  • Bulgaria is a country filled with charm and offers a great variety of unique activities:
  • Bulgaria is known for its wine production since the time of the Thracians. Taking a wine tour of the wine region, such as the Valley of Roses and the region of Melnik, will give you a taste of a variety of local wines, including some native varieties such as Mavrud or Melnik.
  • Bulgaria has hot springs and public baths in different regions. The baths in Bankya, Sandanski, and Velingrad are popular to enjoy a relaxing soak in the thermal springs, as well as get spa treatments. In addition, the healing Black Sea mud is used in health and beauty treatments at tourist resorts along the coast.
  • In the region of Belogradchik you'll find impressive rock formations and cliffs that are very unique. Most popular is the Fortress, rock caves that have been used as a refuge for centuries. Today, this is a popular destination for hiking and rock climbing.
  • Each year, the Kazanlak valley celebrates the Rose Festival, an event paying homage to the rich history of rose oil production in Bulgaria. Visitors can witness rose picking, parades, contests, and cultural activities. Submerge yourself in the Bulgarian rose tradition.
