DRIVING TIPS
The use of the seatbelt is mandatory for all vehicle occupants, without exception. Fines given for not wearing one can be steep.

Speed bumps are common in urban and rural streets. Reduce your speed considerably when nearing one to avoid damaging the vehicle.
Traffic in cities like Guatemala City can get very backed up, especially during rush hour. Plan your routes ahead of time to avoid any delays, and be patient.
On rural streets it is common to encounter heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses. Be careful when overtaking and chose the right moments to do so.
Some main roads in Guatemala have tollbooths. Be sure to carry local currency (quetzales) in cash, in small amounts to pay for tolls.
Motorcycles are popular in Guatemala and usually zigzag around traffic. Keep a safe distance and anticipate their moves.
