Important Information when Visiting Jamaica

  • Like in many other countries in the region, you must drive on the left side of the road in Jamaica. Be sure to adapt to this norm from the start.
  • Pay attention to the traffic signals and respect the set speed limits. Limits may vary according to the type of road and location.
  • Roadways in Jamaica can vary in quality. Some areas may have potholes, unpaved sections, and narrow passages. Drive carefully and adapt your speed to the road conditions.
  • Speed bumps are common in urban and rural areas. Reduce your speed considerably when you get near one to avoid damaging the vehicle.
  • In many urban and rural spaces, pedestrians can cross the street in undesignated areas. Be aware of this and reduce your speed where there is pedestrian activity.
  • In Jamaica it is mandatory to drive with the headlights on during the day. This improves visibility and safety on the road.
  • Keep a full tank of gas, especially if traveling in rural areas where service stations may be less frequent.
  • It is common for music to be blaring in Jamaica. However, be sure to keep the volume at a level that will permit you to hear the noises on the street and nearby vehicles.
  • One additional driver does not have an additional charge. A second additional driver will be charged $10.00 USD per day. A maximum of 2 additional drivers are permitted.
  • 23 is the minimum age to rent a vehicle, while the maximum age is 65.
  • Reservations must be cancelled at least 24 hours before pick up through the same source as the reservation was made, or be subject to one days’ rental fee.
  • Debit cards are allowed.
  • Mayor credit cards and debit cards are accepted. You’ll be required to give a $1000.00 USD deposit (or more, depending on the vehicle) plus the estimated rental cost.
  • Valid Driver’s License: You’ll need a driver’s license from your home country to drive in Jamaica, along with your passport. Temporary driver’s licenses may be rejected and not accepted.
  • Method of Payment: Credit/debit cards must be under the same name as the renter (some restrictions may apply).
  • You’ll need a credit or debit card (cardholder’s name matches main driver’s name) to make a rental deposit. Deposits vary according to the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is released once the automobile has been returned in the same condition as when it left, and this could take several days or up to a week to process.
  • Coverage: Credit cards that cover the CDW in Jamaica: Mastercard World and Mastercard Business (USA), Mastercard Platinum and Gold (Canada), Visa Platinum and Gold, and any other credit card must cover CDW (collision, damages, and rollover).
  • We provide some tips so you can be well-prepared for your trip to Jamaica:
  • Be sure to have a valid passport and other necessary documents. Verify if you need a visa before traveling to Jamaica according to your country of origin.
  • Jamaica has a tropical climate so take light and comfortable clothing. Don’t forget swimsuits, beach clothes, and walking shoes.
  • Due to the sunny weather use wide spectrum protection sunscreen, as well as insect repellent to protect yourself from mosquitos and other insects.
  • Ask a medical professional about recommended vaccines to travel to Jamaica. It is important to have up-to-date vaccines, and consider carrying a first-aid kit.
  • Jamaica uses A and B sockets, with 110V frequency. Be sure to have adapters if your electronic devices use different voltage or plugs.
