Important Information when Visiting Panama
DRIVING TIPS
On the main roads and highways in Panama you’ll find an electronic toll collection system. Be sure to have a prepaid card or a compatible electronic device to pay tolls efficiently.
In Panama City, some streets have reversible lanes that change direction according to the time of day. Familiarize yourself with the schedules and directions of these lanes before driving in the city.
In Panama City and other important cities there is a vehicle restriction schedule known as “Pico y Placa”. Depending on the last number of your license plate there will be certain days that the vehicle may not be driven in some areas, during certain hours. Be sure to know the restrictions that apply.
In urban areas, parking can be limited and costly. Find safe public parking lots or use apps to find available spots.
The traffic in Panama City can sometimes be very backed up, especially during rush hour. Plan your routes ahead of time to avoid any delays, and be patient.
During rainy season the road can become slippery. Be sure to have tires that are in good condition and reduce your speed when it is raining.
It is possible to encounter animals on the road in rural areas. Slowdown and keep your attention on the road to avoid accidents.
