Important Information when Visiting Panama

  • On the main roads and highways in Panama you’ll find an electronic toll collection system. Be sure to have a prepaid card or a compatible electronic device to pay tolls efficiently.
  • In Panama City, some streets have reversible lanes that change direction according to the time of day. Familiarize yourself with the schedules and directions of these lanes before driving in the city.
  • In Panama City and other important cities there is a vehicle restriction schedule known as “Pico y Placa”. Depending on the last number of your license plate there will be certain days that the vehicle may not be driven in some areas, during certain hours. Be sure to know the restrictions that apply.
  • In urban areas, parking can be limited and costly. Find safe public parking lots or use apps to find available spots.
  • The traffic in Panama City can sometimes be very backed up, especially during rush hour. Plan your routes ahead of time to avoid any delays,and be patient.
  • During rainy season the road can become slippery. Be sure to have tires that are in good condition and reduce your speed when it is raining.
  • It is possible to encounter animals on the road in rural areas. Slowdown and keep your attention on the road to avoid accidents.
  • The charge for an additional driver is $6.00 per day, for a maximum of 3 additional drivers.
  • The minimum age to rent a car or be an additional driver is 25 years old. Drivers that are 23 or 24 can rent a vehicle for an additional $10.00 per day, with a higher deductible to protect from collision damage (LDW). No additional charges will be added if the renter is 25 years old.
  • The vehicle must be returned with the same amount of fuel it had when it was picked up, to avoid a refueling charge.
  • The renter must present a valid driver’s license at the moment of renting the vehicle. Foreign renters must present a valid driver’s license and a valid passport, and depending on the stamp of entry, they will be allowed to rent a vehicle up to 90 days.
  • We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express. Deposit: The deposit will be withheld on your card at the time of rental. Once the vehicle has been returned, the deposit will be reimbursed; this process may take 7 to 14 business days. We do not accept debit cards to make the deposit.
  • Verify if you need a visa to enter Panama according to your nationality.
  • The official currency in Panama is the balboa, but the American dollar is widely accepted. Be sure to carry enough cash in small bills.
  • Use ATMS from trustworthy banks to retrieve cash, and avoid changing money at non-authorized places.
  • Panama has a tropical climate so pack light clothing, sunblock, a hat, and insect repellent.
  • Consult with your doctor before the trip to make sure your vaccines are up-to-date and you have the necessary prophylaxis.
  • Drink bottled water and avoid eating raw food to avoid illnesses transmitted by food.
  • Investigate local culture and respect the customs and traditions in Panama. Learn some basic phrases in Spanish to ease communication with the locals.
