Important Information when Visiting Virgin Islands

  • Be sure to have all the necessary documents to enter the US Virgin Islands, including a valid passport. American citizens do not require a visa but citizens of other countries might have different requirements.
  • The official currency is the American dollar. Most places accept credit cards but we recommend having some cash for small purchases and tips.
  • As you'll be in a tropical climate, it is essential to carry wide spectrum protection sunscreen and insect repellent to protect yourself from the sun's rays and mosquitos.
  • Carry light and comfortable clothing, such as bathing suits, t-shirts, shorts, and sandals. In addition, pack a pair of comfortable shoes to walk and explore.
  • The US Virgin Islands are famous for beaches and aquatic activities. Be sure to have a swimsuit, snorkeling goggles, and other snorkeling equipment as the crystal waters are ideal to explore marine life.
  • The tropical climate can be hot and humid, so keep yourself hydrated by regularly drinking water, especially if you are participating in outdoor activities.
  • Additional drivers must qualify in the same way as the main driver. Additional drivers must share the same responsibility for the rental vehicle. Additional drivers will be subject to a $10.00 fee per day.
  • Renters must be at least 25 years old or more.
  • Vehicles are rented with a full tank of gas and must be returned full to avoid a refueling charge at local cost.
  • Taxes, fees, and charges are not included in the base rent. Government tax in the Virgin Islands is $3.75 a day. Airport access fees are 8.0% of the rental. The charge for a license is of $3.75 a day.
  • There is no mileage restriction. Vehicles can be taken (upon request) to the adjacent island of St. John.
  • Rental cars must be returned to our St. Thomas location (same as pick up). If the rental car is delivered at the airport or afterhours there is an additional charge of $100.00 a day; in addition to any parking fees or fines. If the vehicle is left at St. John there will be a recovery charge of $400.00. The rental car must be returned to our street in St. Thomas (same as pick up).
  • Valid Driver’s License: You'll need a driver's license from your home country to drive in the Virgin Islands, along with your passport. Temporary driver's licenses may be rejected and not accepted.
  • Proof of Insurance: If you plan to self-insure, we’ll need proof of personal coverage with the renter's name on the policy and show collision and civil liability insurance for injury and property damage. *** Economy Rent a Car does not accept commercial insurance for vehicle rental.
  • Credit Card: You will be charged an equivalent to the estimated rental cost plus a $500.00 deposit upon rental. Deposits are returned after the rental car is returned in good condition and all additional expenses have been paid. All renters must have a valid credit card in their name to show at the counter.
