Important Information when Visiting Greece

  • Be sure to know the local traffic laws and traffic signals in Greece. Drive on the right side of the road and remember to use your seatbelt, as it is mandatory for all passengers.
  • Finding where to park can be a challenge, especially in urban areas. Find designated parking spots or garages to avoid parking illegally.
  • Greek cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, can have a lot of traffic and narrow streets. Be patient, follow the traffic regulations, and consider using public transportation inside the cities.
  • If you are driving in Greek islands like Crete or Rhodes, keep in mind that street conditions may vary. Some streets can be narrower or be less maintained than what you are used to.
  • Pay attention to speed limits, as they can vary according to the type of street and location. Fines for speeding can be considerable, so it is best to respect the specified limits.
  • It is mandatory to use the headlights at all times, even during the day, both on highways and rural roads.
  • Familiarize yourself with emergency contact numbers, like the police (100) and medical assistance (166).
  • The minimum age to drive the selected vehicle is 21 years old. The maximum age for the selected vehicle is 80. 10 € a day will be added to drivers between the ages of 71 and 80. The cost of an additional driver (ages 25-70) is 3 euros a day.
  • If the vehicle is returned with less fuel than indicated in the rental document, you must pay for the missing fuel when returning the vehicle. The refueling cost for a quarter tank of gas for a car is a minimum of 20 €.
  • Vehicles cannot be taken out of the island of Crete without written authorization by CarGreece.com
  • A rental is considered one-way if the vehicle is returned at any spot that is not where it was picked up. The usual cost of a one-way from the airport in Heraklion to the airport in Chania is 40 euros, but it differs according to pick-up location and drop-off point in Chania.
  • If you don’t pick-up the vehicle on the set date and time, or if you notified your cancellation after the 48-hour-mark before pick-up, it will be considered an absence. If you cannot pick up the vehicle due to insufficient documentation or, because your credit card is invalid, not accepted through our bank or has insufficient funds to cover the deposit, this will also be considered as an absence. Fees may be applied.
  • Valid Driver’s License: You’ll need a driver’s license from your home country to drive in Greece, along with your passport. Temporary driver’s licenses can be rejected and not accepted. In addition, you must present an identification card and passport.
  • Coverage: This is not an insurance policy. -L.W. -Liability * is a waiver of rights by Economy Rent a Car to charge the renter or the renters for damages by a third party during the rental period, and is required unless the renters can provide written proof of personal insurance that will have acceptable coverage in Crete, Greece during the rental period.
  • Method of Payment: Credit/debit card under the main renter’s name (restrictions may apply).
  • Respect the local customs and traditions. Learn some basic Greek phrases such as “hello” (γειά σας) and “thank you”(ευχαριστώ). Greeting others and saying good-bye is commonly done with a handshake.
  • In religious and more conservative sites, such as monasteries and churches, we recommend dressing appropriately and modestly. For beaches and tourist areas, casual clothing is acceptable.
  • Greece has a warm climate in the summer, so be sure to keep yourself hydrated and use sunblock to avoid sunburns.
  • In Greece, mealtimes tend to be later than in other places. Lunch is eaten at about 2:00 p.m. and dinner is after 8:00 p.m.
  • At restaurants, it is common to leave a tip between 5 and 10%, if the service is not included on the bill.
