DRIVING TIPS

In Iceland, you drive on the right side of the road as in most countries around the world.

The speed limits in Iceland vary according to the type of street. Pay attention to the signals and respect the set limits to guarantee a safe drive.

Iceland’;s weather is unpredictable, even in the summer. Prepare for rain, snow, wind, and sudden temperature changes. Take adequate clothing with you, and make sure to have winter tires if you are traveling in the wintertime.

Daytime running lights must be on at all times, even during the day, to increase visibility and for more safety while on the road.

Highways in Iceland can be narrow and winding. Keep a safe distance from vehicles that are in front of you, so that you have enough time to react in any unprecedented situations.

In Iceland it is common to find shores or river crossings. Make sure to know the rules and recommendations to cross them safely.

Some areas in Iceland have un-paved gravel roads. Drive carefully on these roads and make sure to have an adequate vehicle while on this kind of terrain.

Iceland is hope to diverse animal species such as sheep and birds. Drive carefully and reduce your speed in wildlife areas to avoid accidents.

The distances between different places in Iceland may be farther than they appear on a map. Plan your routes well and make sure to have enough fuel and provisions in case of an emergency.

RENTING A CAR IN ICELAND

The minimum age to rent a car is 20 years of age. There is a fee of $10 for drivers between the ages of 20 and 25.

Car seats and seatbelts are obligatory by law. At Economy you can obtain a car seat for an additional fee (subject to availability).

Consider including roadside assistance with your rental for an additional fee. You can always request an additional driver, one or more people, to share the driving duties.

Be sure to rent a vehicle that adapts to your needs. If you are exploring destinations of difficult access, un-paved or steep roads, we recommend renting an SUV. If you wish to spend less on fuel, ideally you should rent a sedan.

When returning the car, it must be returned with the same amount of gasoline as it had when it was picked up.

NECESSARY DOCUMENTS TO RENT A CAR IN ICELAND

Valid Driver’s License - We will require a driver’s license from your country of origin to drive in Iceland, along with your passport. The driver’s license must be at least one year old, without tickets or penalty points. You’ll need an international driver’;s license (IDL) if your national driver’s license isn’t written with the Roman alphabet (for example, if it is in Arabic, Greek, Russian or Chinese).

Payment Method - We will require a credit card (with the main driver’s name) to process the rental payment and especially, pay the security deposit. The rental payment may be done with cash or debit card. Deposits vary according to the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is refunded once the car has returned, as long as the car is in the same condition as it was received at the office, and it can take a few days up to a month to process, depending on the issuing bank.
