Important Information when Visiting Mexico

  • In Mexico, it is common to run into “topes” or speed bumps on the road, especially in urban areas and near schools. These are obstacles designed to reduce the speed of the vehicles. Pay attention to the warning signs and lower the speed gradually when approaching them.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists have the right of way at crosswalks and bike lanes. Pay attention to your surroundings and yield when necessary. Maintain a safe distance when passing cyclists on the road and respecting them as vulnerable users of the street.
  • Respect red and green traffic lights, stopping completely at the mandatory stops. In addition, pay attention to road signage and follow the instructions of exclusive lanes and U-turns, and speed limits.
  • When driving on mountain or curvy roads, reduce your speed and keep necessary precautions. In addition, when facing steep hills, select the adequate gear change.
  • Use lowlights during the night and when driving with conditions of little visibility, such as inside a tunnel. You must also turn on the blinkers when making maneuvers to overtake or stop temporarily.
  • When returning the vehicle, the car must be returned with the same amount of gasoline it had when you picked it up.
  • It is very important to know the places you are going to visit. Know the most favorable routes depending on the type of vehicle you’ve rented, so that you can arrive at your destination more quickly using alternate routes.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license to rent the automobile.
  • The following offices require at least 18 years of age when renting a car: Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, San Jose del Cabo, Silao. Between the ages of 18 and 24, there will be an additional charge of $ 6.50 per day with the greatest deductible of the LDW.
  • The following offices require a minimum of 21 years of age when renting a car: Cancun, Tulum, Colima, Huatulco, Manzanillo, Merida, Mexico City, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Playa del Carmen, Queretaro, Torreon, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Villahermosa.

  • Mexican laws require all car rental contracts to include at least one civil liability insurance. The PLI is required coverage according to Article 83 of the Mexican transportation regulation, unless the renter can provide written proof that their insurance company or credit entity has valid insurance to cover third parties / property in Mexico.

  • Form of Payment – We will require a credit card (main driver is the cardholder) to make a deposit for the rental. The deposits vary according to the protection plan you choose and the vehicle. • In Mexico, the currency is the Mexican “peso”. However, all establishments accept dollars (most common currency for tourists). We always recommend traveling with at least a few pesos in your pocket. The majority of restaurants, supermarkets and food shops also accept a credit or debit card payment. A dollar ($1) is equivalent to 17 pesos approximately (this varies according to the exchange rate). You can exchange dollars in banks or at exchange agencies in the international airport, but with a very high exchange rate.
