Important Information when Visiting St. Martin
DRIVING TIPS
St. Maarten/Sint Maarten is an island in the Caribbean, divided into two parts: the northern side is part of the overseas region belonging to France (Saint Maarten) and the southern side is an indigenous country belonging to the Netherlands (Sint Maarten). Each part has its own traffic legislation but, both drive on the right side of the road. Here you have some driving tips useful for both sides of the island:
Make sure to know traffic rules and specific regulations for each side of the island. Traffic signals and laws may vary between Saint Maarten and Sint Maarten.
The island of St. Maarten/Sint Maarten is a melting pot of cultures with French and Dutch influences, as well as of other countries. Respect the cultural diversity and local customs while driving.
While driving between the French and Dutch territories, consider that you are crossing an international border. Pay attention to signals and directions, and be sure to have all the necessary documents like a passport and driver's license.
Respect speed limits and pay attention to traffic signs on both sides of the island. Traffic rules can be strict and speeding tickets can be costly.
Be sure that all passengers use their seatbelts at all times, no matter what part of the island you find yourselves in.
RENTING A CAR IN St. Martin
Make sure to rent a vehicle that adapts to your needs. If you are going to explore destinations with difficult access, un-paved or steep roads, we recommend renting an SUV.If you wish to spend less on fuel, ideally you should rent a sedan.
Consider additional equipment that you may need during your adventure, such as a car seat, Wi-Fi, GPS or others.
When returning the car, it must be returned with the same amount of gasoline as it had when it was picked up.
The cost of additional drivers is $5.00 USD a day.
There is a minimum age requirement of 21 years to rent a car.
Cancelations must be made 24 hours before pick-up time.
If the CDW is not purchased ($5.00 USD a day), the client will be responsible for the total value of the vehicle.
Rentals will include a rate of $12.00 for location fees, 5% sales tax, and 5.5% service charge. Vehicles may not leave the island.

French and Dutch are the official languages but English is also widely spoken and understood, especially on the Dutch side.
