Important Information when Visiting Trinidad and Tobago
DRIVING TIPS
As in the United Kingdom and in other places, people in Trinidad and Tobago drive on the left side of the road. Be sure to familiarize yourself with this norm before beginning to drive.
Roads in Trinidad and Tobago can have potholes and irregularities so, drive with precaution to avoid damaging the vehicle and keep to a reasonable speed limit. In rural areas it is common to encounter animals, such as cows, goats, and dogs, on the street. Reduce your speed in these areas and pay attention to the road to avoid accidents.
Pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks. Pay attention and respect the crosswalks to guarantee the safety of those on foot.
During the rainy season, roads can become slippery and dangerous. Reduce your speed and increase the distance between vehicles to avoid collisions.
Turn on the headlights of your vehicle at nighttime and when it rains to increase visibility. In addition, use the blinker to turn and change lanes.
If you plan to drive in mountainous areas, be ready for steep and winding roads. Use lower gears to keep the vehicle under control and avoid braking in excess on prolonged descents.
RENTING A CAR IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
Drivers must be over 21 years old, in Trinidad and Tobago, in order to be held responsible for a vehicle rental. There is also a fee for drivers under 25 of $11.25 USD a day.
All vehicles are rented with a full tank of gas and are expected to be returned in the same way.
If you do not want the GT, the client is completely responsible for any damage caused to any part of the automobile.
NECESSARY DOCUMENTS TO RENT A CAR IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
Valid Driver’s License: You’ll need a driver’s license from your home country to drive in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as your passport. Temporary driver’s licenses can be rejected and not accepted.
Method of Payment: Credit or debit card under the renter’s name (restrictions may apply). You’ll need a credit or debit card (under the main driver’s name) to make a rental deposit. Deposits vary according to the protection plan and vehicle you choose. This deposit is reimbursed when you return the car, as long as the car is in the same condition as it was when it left the office, and it could take several days or even a week to process.
TRAVELING IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO
Be sure to have all the necessary travel documentation, including passport, visa (if needed), and any other identification. Verify the entry requirements before traveling.
Trinidad and Tobago has a tropical climate, so pack light clothing, swimwear, and sunblock. However, there can also be intense rainfall so, also pack an umbrella or a raincoat.
Consult with a medical physician before traveling and make sure to have the necessary vaccines, and take any recommended health precautions. Carry with you any medication you need and a basic first-aid kit.
The official currency is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TTD). Be sure to carry sufficient cash, as not all shops and restaurants accept credit cards. You can exchange currency at banks and exchange offices.
Try the delicious local cuisine which has a mixture of African, Indian, and Creole influences. Be sure to try traditional dishes such as “roti” and “doble”. Drink bottled water and avoid ice in your beverages, if you have a sensitive stomach.
Respect the local customs and traditions. The population of Trinidad and Tobago is diverse and multicultural so be aware of the different cultures, and act with respect and tolerance.
